Last Friday, as part of The Liminal and North Somerset Arts Week, I found myself doing a reading in the art studio / garage of Karen Blake, eating Skips and sheltering from the borderline-Biblical rain that had descended on Weston.
Also reading were local author and poet June Bastable, who didn’t start writing until she was 65 but appears to be making up for it now, and recently-retired truculent teenager wrangler Alienora Taylor, reading from her semi-autobiographical novel “Long-Leggedy Beasties”, about the perils of teaching in a comprehensive school for three decades. Needless to say, both June with her poetry and Alienora with her hordes of teenage boys were hilarious, much funnier than me 🙂
I read a section from “The Art of Forgetting”, and “The Lokemi Spirit” from The Feline Queen. The second half over the evening was open mic and some brave and talented local writers (Conrad, Gareth and Ashlene) got up and joined in the fun.
It was a really enjoyable evening and I hope I’ll be invited back in the future! Many thanks to Becky and Karen for organising it and providing such a great venue, and to Keith Ramsey for the photographs, used with his permission.
