Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you. “Spark and Carousel” had made the longlist for the 2016 Gemmell Award, and it’s in some amazing company. Feast your eyes on this :
The Longlist includes books by Joe Abercrombie, Trudi Canavan, Edward Cox, Aliette De Bodard, Kate Elliott, Robin Hobb, N J Jemisin, Julia Knight, Snorri Kristjansson, M D Lachlan, Glenda Larke, Rebecca Levene, Tom Lloyd, Naomi Novik, Daniel Polansky, Steven Poore, Adrian Tchaikovsky and Jen Williams, among others. Which is amazing, because there are so many people on the list I am a huge and shameless fan of, so to be in such company is quite staggering and very flattering.
Voting is open to all – you don’t have to register or anything, just go to the website and click! You can also vote for the MorningStar (Best Debut) and the Ravenheart (Best Cover Art) while you’re there.
The Gemmell is the one that means a lot to me – to be longlisted for any award is quite lovely, but the Gemmell is extra-lovely because I’ve been reading David Gemmell since I was about 13, and he was one of the authors who first got me in to fantasy. And I met him when I was just starting out – probably only about six months before he died – and he was so lovely, so generous with his time and good to his fans, so, yeah, this one means that little bit extra….
I have no illusions about getting on the shortlist, that would be like Leicester winning the Premier League (hey, the highly unlikely happens sometimes, especially in fantasy and football!) but if you really enjoyed Spark and Carousel please feel free to show it some love…
